Veganism is more than a diet. It is a belief system and a total lifestyle. A vegan will not eat, use, or wear any products that come from animals, whether directly or indirectly.

What does a vegan eat instead? The short answer would be anything that is not derived from animals. A more specific answer is that their diet is entirely plant-based. All their food comes out of the ground, or off a bush, tree, or vine. Any vegetable or fruit would be acceptable, but when a vegan eats processed food, it becomes a bit more tricky. Some food colorings or thickening agents are actually made from ground-up insects, and sugar, although it is a plant-based product, is filtered through animal bone char.

Eating vegan can be as easy as doing all your shopping in the produce section, with a quick jaunt down the bulk aisle for your whole grains. Rice, beans, nuts, seeds, and many dark leafy greens and dark green vegetables will provide enough protein if you eat the right foods in the right amounts. Any vegetable, fruit, grain, legume, or seed is acceptable to a vegan, in its natural state, with no processing.

However, vegans who choose to eat processed food have their work cut out for them, as they need to learn the ins and outs of how food is made, and what foods or additives to watch out for. Even foods labeled as vegan are not always truly vegan.

Whether one chooses an all natural or a processed vegan diet, either choice will offer a vegan as much variety and flavor in their diet as any non-vegan has, the only difference is that the variety and flavor will come only from plant-based sources, with no harm to animals.

What is Vegan Protein Powder Made From?

Most protein powders tend to be milk-based, using whey and casein proteins.

Many people who hear about vegan protein powders from websites like The Vegan Life, Vegan.com or Oh She Glows, wonder what they could possibly be made from, since vegans never consume dairy products.

You may be surprised to find out that there are many different plant-based sources for protein, including many nuts, seeds, legumes, and dark leafy greens.

Some of the plant-based protein powder options use soy protein, pea protein, hemp protein, or rice protein. Hemp seeds in particular are very high in protein, making them an excellent source for powder supplements. Many smoothie recipes call for hemp seed protein powder as an ingredient, to bump up the nutritive content.

Pea protein is another favorite, as its flavor is milder and the powder is smoother than hemp seed powders.

Although many people still propagate myths about vegan foods lacking in nutrition like amino acids, that is simply not true. Plant proteins often contain amino acids, just in a lower amount than what is typically found in eggs and dairy. A vegan can get the nine essential amino acids they need for building muscle and for optimum body functionality with just a balanced vegan diet. But with a protein-rich supplement, an athlete or bodybuilder can get everything he needs, all powered by plants!

But it is not just vegans who benefit from these plant-derived powders. Even some omnivores may find that they perform better with vegan protein powder. Is Vegan Chocolate Any Good?

This video is great.

Real chocolate lovers try vegan chocolate. Remember that vegans do not eat any animal products. You might not think that chocolate comes from animals, however if it contains any dairy products like milk, ie “milk chocolate”, then it’s not vegan.

I personally find vegan chocolate to taste great, and the best part is you aren’t consuming any animal products.
